There is a risk that roads will be snow covered. It depends on how much snow is falling when. If you are not confident driving on snow, you might want to think twice about renting a car.
I personally have been driving in the Sapporo and Niseko area in February 2007 and 2006. In 2007, all roads were free of snow, and it was no problem to snow. However, 2006 was a record breaking year in terms of snow fall. Many roads, even major ones, were snow covered, and I had some dangerous moments with slippery roads.
It depends on the timing and amount of snow fall and on your confidence as a driver.

that's why i am attempting mid dec and doing a course without mountain roads. i am trying to reduce the risk by selecting a easy course and in a period where snow fall is not as heavy.
do u think the above are relevant in this case?
