WE have heard that it is good to have little gifts to give to people that meet along the way in Japan. We live in the northwast US and are wondering what sorts of things to bring along as gifts.

You really don't have to gift anyone. Japanese people when traveling do get gifts for their friends, co-workers, family etc etc.
But generally to strangers, not so. Now, Unless you feel that someone has gone really really out of their way to assist you maybe. But generally speaking you don't have to give gifts to everyone you meet or assisted you.
