Spa's in Beppu allow tattoos? 2007/9/21 07:10
Are there any public (or private) spa's in Beppu that allow tattoos? I have heard it's frowned upon and even banned at public spas. I have an armband, will I be kicked out? I'm backpacking in Japan in Oct and I was really interested in trying out the spas/mud baths in Beppu.

Btw, I'm Korean. I could be mistaken for a Japanese local. I'm not sure if they would be more lenient to caucasian folks if there really is a no tattoo policy.

I don't think that a simple armband will be a problem.
It'll very likely not even be noticed.
In any case, you could walk in with something across your arm (e.g. towel) and once inside nobody's really gonna care.
You then could also keep the arm below the water.
I think people are more concerned about the Yakuza-type of all-over-the-body tatoos (and the people who carry them)
