PiTaPa for students

I'm a college student in Osaka, and since most of my commutes are on the Keihan, Kintetsu and subway, I have been considering applying for a PiTaPa.
I hear there is a discounted rate for students. Does this discount only apply for commuter cards or do standard fares apply as well?
If the conditions for discounts are limited I'm guessing it would be more practical to just purchase an ICOCA card...

In order to profit from the student discounts, you need to go to a ticket office and register yourself. You need to bring your PiTaPa card and student card.
