Best/Cheapest time to travel to Japan? 2007/9/21 22:38
Hello friendly people of the board!

I'm a Gap year student hoping to travel to Japan sometime next year. Naturally I was wondering a few things having never been to Japan before.

1. Is there a cheap time to go to Japan - being a student an' all I'm relatively tight with cash.

2. Where would you traveled travelers recommend on visting? - I want to get a taste of Japanese History, nature, but also experience the buzzing neon night-life and pop-culture.

3.Do you also know of cheap accommodation? - As long as it has a roof and a place to go no.2 I'm happy :D

It depends on where you are coming from. In general, international airfares tend to be high around spring (April), summer (July-August) and winter holidays (late December, early January).

As for domestic travel costs, they don't vary so much around the year. Hotels in resorts get more expensive during Japanese travel peak seasons, which are New year, Golden Week (late April, early March), summer holidays (second half July and August) and some other seasonal, local attractions, such as autumn leave season in famous autumn leaf spots.

I recommend mid and late May for the combination of low rates and good weather (for most of central Japan).
