Best travel options? 2007/9/23 22:23
Hi, I'll be travelling to Japan for my honeymoon next march for a total of 10 nights (11 days). Arriving in Osaka and staying in Kyoto for 4 nights, followed by 2 nights in a ryokan and then the next 4 nights in Tokyo before departing via Narita Airport. Can someone please advise me on whether its wiser for me to purchase the JR Rail 7 days pass or should we just get 1-way tickets (from Kyoto to Tokyo)and daily train tickets in Kyoto and Tokyo?
Sorry for the really long question but I would appreciate any advice anyone has!

Regular tickets come considerably cheaper than a 7-day Japan Rail Pass:

A Japan Rail pass is only really cost effective if your using it daily on local trains and making bullet train trips every couple of days.

It can be useful to make things a little less hassle free but then your paying for convenience.

The only time a JR pass is cost effective is when its expensive to travel by regular tickets.

It doesn't necessarily mean you use it daily and making bullet train trips every couple of days. It could mean using it only once for one long distance trip to pay itself off, or it can mean making use of it for very short trips but in a high volume in a number of days with no long distance trips. So it depends. But as long as regular train tickets come out to be more expensive then generally speaking a JR pass makes sense.

As mentioned in the poster's case, it is cheaper by regular tickets.

Even multiple bullet train rides can still be cheaper then a JR Pass, thats why it depends on the price of the trip, rather then the frequency of use.
