Recommendation to experience Koyo

I'm planning on my next trip to Japan coming Oct 13 to 20 and would like experience the koyo. I'm a Canadian who's been living/working in Asia for 7 years and really miss the autumn colours.
My wife and I are thinking of Hokkaido and renting an automobile to drive around for the week. Would someone please recommend my itinerary and places to stay overnight/few days as I drive around?

In the average year, mid October is somewhat late to see autumn colors in Hokkaido, except in southeastern Hokkaido. This years, the autumn colors seem to be behind their average schedule, but still, the leaves will have fallen in most higher elevations. So, I would center my trip around southeastern Hokkaido, e.g. Sapporo to Hakodate and the parks in between, including Onuma Park: http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e5356.html
