Where can I find street level maps of different cities in Japan similar to what you can find for U.S. cities on the internet?

street maps in english? 2004/2/22 10:45
Thank you for your reply, but are there any maps in english?

Few and far between 2004/2/23 09:11
The only English language maps tend to be for areas where a lot of tourists are going to show up. Even then, they are usually pretty poor in detail; nothing like a map would be in Japanese.

Is there an area or two we could help you find?

city map written in chinese 2005/6/10 12:00
it depends on the place you're travelling, but you may find the city map written in chinese at regional visitors' infomation centre. for instance, in osaka they give the chinese-japanese map and travel guide free of charge. try finding the visitors' info run by the prefecture you stay.

vanishing maps 2005/6/18 05:12
Yes, Eric, I was disconsolate to find that the wonderful interactive maps (that Hans had provided the link to) disappeared a few days after he posted the link. I had some correspondence with jnto, asking them to find out from their website director what had happened to these scrollable, zoomable, all-of-Japan (in Roman and Japanese characters!), road, railroad, mountain, river, and political division maps (I mean they REALLY WERE COMPLETE). jnto sent me some pdfs, which were nice enough but nothing like what had been there only a few days earlier.

And while the maps whose site you cite are quite nice, they are fixed and only for specific areas. I have spent a lot of time online looking for that interactive map again....

Maps 2005/6/25 07:11
if you have a Japanese bookstore near you, such as: Kinokuniya Bookstore, then try them.

Sometimes they have them, or what I do is pick up the best English map I can find, then when I arrive, I purchase another from a local bookstore. Major cities are easy, yet little ones or towns are much more difficult.

Luck
