Nara Park in Winter? Deer?

My friends are traveling to Kyoto in mid December (18-19th during their two week long stay in Japan)
Nara is one of the places they want to see (the deer), but are they there in the winter? Are things like the museum closed?

The museum is not closed, and the deers will still be walking around in December! :)
