Foot wear for Travel in Japan

We (1 elderly male, a middle age couple and their 2 teenage sons) are planning a tour of Japan in June next year. Are tennis shoes, sandals or zories acceptable at most places?

you should be fine unless you plan on going to fancy restaurants. some clubs require dress shoes, but as a family you probably won't be heading that direction.
