driving around fuji 5 lakes area

i am planning to visit the fuji five lakes area for about 3 days in mid nov. is it a good idea to drive around this area or is it better to take public transport? is driving/parking there going to be expensive? i am thinking of staying in one of the hotels/ryokan near kawaguchiko or fujiyoshida.
