Bringing back a katana 2007/10/18 21:36
I was just wondering if it would be possible to bring back a Katana from japan (to Australia) without having a license or anything, becuase i'd really like to get a traditional japanese sword when im over there, but i really have no idea whether i could get it through customs. Any info would be much appreciated ^_^.

You need a permit from your State Police Force to own a sword, then you can apply to the Australian Customs Service to import a prohibited weapon.

it's ok in USA/Canada 2007/10/19 21:00
I don't know about Australia, but in America and Canada Japanese swords (the unsharpened ones you buy in souvenir shops) customs just counts them as souvenirs. It's no problem at all. The one I bought was put in a long cardboard box. I just counted it as a piece of luggage and it was put into the plane with everything else.
