It depends on where you enter and exit Japan. In case you enter and exit through Tokyo: Tokyo - (air) - Hokkaido - (air) - Osaka - (air or train or bus) - Tokyo An air pass would be a good value: http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e2364.htmlA open-jaw would make it even more elegant, i.e. enter through Hokkaido and exit through Tokyo; enter through Tokyo and exit through Osaka.
