I want to drive in Japan as I will be living in the sticks. My company is offering a contribution toward travel.
In the UK you can rent a car on a monthly basis for less than 2万 what is it like over here?

Or, you can buy a used car for a reasonable price.
I bought a 7-year old Mitsubishi Galant, white-plate, 1.5 years shaken left on it, for 200,000 yen. It was a great car. I never had to make any repairs on it. Best of all, I was able to sell it later.
There are lots of good, cheap, used cars to be found between 100,000 and 300,000 yen. If you don't need the power, yellow-plates tend to be much cheaper than white-plates.

although they have much lower operating costs, yellow plates tend to have higher resale value than white plates. So on a short term basis you are probably better off getting a cheap white plate if you will buy a used car.
