Room Size? 2008/1/2 09:46
I don't know if this is the correct place to post this, but I have a question about room size.

I have rented a room in Japan for 3 months. I got a welcome email with some info in it. One part of it says:

Room sized 4.5 tatami mats.

I know this small, but can someone give me a size estimate of this room in either feet/inches or meters?

I'm only going to use it for sleeping, so I don't care if it's small, but I'm trying to figure out how much luggage I can put in it.

One tatami mat is about 1.62 square meters. Slightly larger in the Kyoto area.

So, 4.5 mats would be a room of, for example, about 2.5 x 3 meters.

another way to look at it is: 1 narrow single bed: 1 tatami
space to walk around:1 tatami 1 desk w/TV,kettle:1/2 tatami.
1 standing closet: 1/2 tatami.
2 big suitcases laying down flat next to one another):
1 tatami
of course it depends on how much furniture there is in the room.
