Prayer bead necklace question 2008/1/4 21:48
While in Japan I saw men wearing a necklace that looked like buddhist prayer beads with an rectangle object and in the center ( about 1" * 2" ) with kanji writhing. What are these and I am assuming each has a different meaning depending on the kanji?
Thanks for the information,
John

I can't recall seeing anything like it, but being curious I did an internet search and this was the closest I can get to;
http://www.kuubokumon.com/garally.html

These products are simply for fashion based on buddism designs. If you can tell us what kind of places you saw them and what kind of fashion these men were wearing (hair and clothes), someone might be able to help you better.

Thanks for the link, but I'd never seen anything like it.

But the man wearing it is apparently either a traditional craftsman, most likely to be a carpenter, or a yakuza. Perhaps it's something unique to these people or something unique to Asakusa or unique to this festival in the photo.

The upper kanji looks like 金 (kin meaning gold) and I can't distinguish the lower kanji.

Hope it helps.
