My friend from Okinakwa just lost her grandfather. What is the proper way to express your sympathy? The family still resides in Okinakwa. I don't know what religion they are.

If you are really close to him/her, sending a flower (generally in white or pale-colored) to the "family" would be nice. But maybe sending a card to your friend would be enough...
