tokyo - osaka 2008/1/15 00:02
The train ( in this case the shinkansen) takes around 2 hours to shin-osaka where you can easaly take the local train to osaka station
that just takes 5 to 10 minutes.

Train times 2008/1/15 03:00
Hi Jan

I am currently researching a similar trip.

I have worked out it is just over 3 hours from Osaka with a change of trains to Tokyo using the Rail pass as you can't use the fastest train (Nozami or something) but you use the shinkansen line.

These trains run hourly.

I think it was around 90 Mins to Kawaguchi from Tokyo I'll have to check that one, there is also a change of trains on this one.

Kawaguchi is on a different line to Osaka, so for my return trip I have to go back to Tokyo and then back down to Osaka.

If you fill your times in on this website it gives you all the times and changes.

1) The highway bus direct to Shinjuku would be recommended. Takes 1 hour 45 minutes, costs 1,700yen and runs every 1 hour between 6:59 and 12:59, and every 30 minutes between 12:59 and 19:07, then 19:59. This isn't covered by the pass.

If you want to take trains, the Fujikyu Line to Otsuki isn't covered by the pass and costs 1,110yen to Otsuki. A limited express train ride incurs 300yen surcharge. Takes at least 2 hours to Shinjuku. Less frequent than the bus, and mostly one tranfer or two is needed. JR Chuo Line from Otsuki to Shinjuku (and onto Ikebukuro) is fully covered by the pass.

For train connectin search;

From Shinjuku, take a Yamanote Line train to Ikebukuro. 9 minutes, very frequent.

2) Catch a JR Yamanote Line train to Tokyo. Takes 22 minutes and runs very frequently.

Then change to the Shinkansen Hikari or Kodama, not Nozomi. Hikari takes 3 hours to Shin-Osaka and runs every 30 minutes.

Again change to the Subway Midosuji Line. 4 minutes to Nakatsu, very frequent and costs 200yen, not covered by the pass.

3) Catch the Subway to Shin-Osaka. Info same above.

Change to the JR Limited Express Haruka to KIX. Runs every 30 minutes and takes about 50 minutes.

Bon voyage.
