Finding non-drink vending machine? 2008/1/14 20:24
Hi, I'm on vacation in Japan, and I have been trying to find a vending machine that sells something other than drinks/coffee/cigarettes.

Anyone who has been/lives in Japan, what cities can I find a non-drink/coffee/cigarette vending machine? I've been here for 2 weeks, and I know the Tokyo area pretty well, so please feel free to tell me the city. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

There are various kinds of food vending machines at "parking area"s which are the resting areas along automobile express ways. The smaller parking areas tend to have more machines while the larger ones sell food over the counter.

Kenny,

Out in the country, and even around these parts, you can find vending machines selling fresh eggs and other farm produce beside the road.

Non-drink vending machines are rare, and there's no place I know of where you'll see a concentration of them. But you may be able to glean a location or two from this collection of unusual vending machines in Japan:

Non-drink vending machines are a lot more common out in the countryside than they are in Tokyo.

When I lived in the north of Saitama, there were rice vending machines selling quite large bags, egg vending machines and even daikon vending machines.

Apart from drinks, cigarettes and the occasional snack machine, the only other kind of machine I have seen in Tokyo are the "adult" ones on Love Hotel Hill in Shibuya.

I find that in some business hotels there are "hot food" vending machines that dispense microwaved hot foods.

Of course there are vending machines everywhere if you think about it, vending machines that sell tickets for everything from food to train tickets.

Back Alleys and Dead Ends 2008/1/15 19:18
While wandering the back streets of Ikebukuro, I came across a small dead end that was packed with vending machines selling drinks, alcohol, cigarettes, porn, condoms and much, much more.

You won't find these kinds of machines on main roads.

These ones were hidden behind a small curtain, but I was curious as to why there would be a curtain across what looked like pavement, and had a look.

In my town in Saitama, I found a vending machine selling Toshiba batteries, next to a normal road. :)

curry, newspapers, and toys 2008/1/25 09:43
I've spotted some vending machines at the JR Akihabara station that sell canned vegetables and curries. There are machines that sell newspapers and snacks (chips, pastries, candy, etc) in the Hibiya station when you go to exit 1. Finally, not sure if you consider these "vending machines", as each machine sells only one item, but there are aisles of machines (literally 100's of them) that sell small toys, cell phone charms, etc. on the toy floor of Yodabashi in Akihabara...I'm guessing that Bic Camera, Labi, etc. all would have similar machines.

I haven't . . . 2008/1/25 10:21
. . . seen them lately, but on the toll expressways I saw vending machines that dispensed ramen.

A bit off topic, but on the local railway along the Sanin coast, the train car had a vending machine inside! It was either that train line or the one through Minakamo Onsen, I forget . . .

You can find food vending machines outside the baseball and football
stadiums near Aoyama. If you also walk around the inside of the ring road near the stadiums there is a kids playground which has about 10 of
them all lined up next to each other - very colourful. Gaienmae on the Ginza line is the closest train station. Good Luck.
