JR Pass and any advice 2008/1/18 16:00
There are 2 of us planning to do Tokyo-Mt Fuji-Kyoto-Hiroshima-Nagasaki-Osaka-Tokyo during a 7 days trip. Both of us have been through a sampler of Tokyo before and hence have seen some of Tokyo, except Tokyo Tower. Would there be any tours available for the period of 7 to 13 Feb 2008, and what are the prices like? We have our own airfare arriving Narita Airport at about 8pm on 7 Feb. We also do not mind joining groups of up to 10 people, but will prefer if the tours can be conducted either in English or Madarin.
Thank you, have a good day!

Trip 2008/1/19 05:54

you can easily do a trip on your own without any problem. the majority of tourists do it, even without speaking Japanese.
one suggestion: going to Nagasaki on such a short trip is not practical at all. It is too far away and the time you waste travelling that far would be better used spending time (one afternoon at least) on Miyajima Island while you are visiting Hiroshima.

JR Cost 2008/1/19 11:14
Thank you Sensei 2 for your answer. Would you or anyn friends out there happen to know how much will it cost to travel from Narita/Tokyo to mt fuji, then to kyoto and hiroshima? I could manage places to stay at these locations, but the JR costs is a bit confusing. I tried http://www.hyperdia.com/cgi-english/hyperWeb.cgi. But there are 5 different costs for each destinations, so i don't really understand what they mean.
Thanks and appreciate any help here.

JR or JR West??? 2008/1/19 12:52
Uji, thanks for your quick reply. Will study your comment. 1 quick question though, is it ok for me to purchase a JR West or do I need to purchase the JR Pass? What's the difference?
Thanks for your help!

JR pass 2008/1/19 17:30
the JR pass cover all of Japan. the JR WEST pass only covers the area between Osaka and Hakata(Fukuoka). it doesn't cover any trip between Tokyo and Osaka.
use Hyperdia to find out about the trains schedules if you have a JR pass (don't worry about the price, only worry about the length of each trip and the numbers of transfers) you can also use Hyperdia to find out how much is the price of single ticket from A to B, then B to C etc. then add the price of all these tickets to see if a JR pass is a good deal or not.
an All Japan JR PASS for 7 days is roughly equivalent to the price of a return trip from Tokyo to Osaka. So it is a good deal for you as you will go to Hiroshima,Miyajima, Kyoto, Nara etc.
the reason you see 5 different trips, often at different prices, when you look at Hyperdia is because each trip uses a different type of trains etc. and leave at a different time of the day. you can also click on Shinkansen only or limited Express only depending on the trip.. it is a bit confusing at first..

Any Suggestions? 2008/1/21 13:26
Hi All,

Have been reading quite a bit on the questions and advices on this forum.

I initially wanted to do a hyper trip by packing everything into 7 days. Then from what I've read, I realised that its not a very doable thing.

So, back to planning again. Any advice what I should do on a 7 day trip?

Will be arriving on 7 Feb and meeting up with my husband's customer to sign a contract. He is flying through Narita Airport.

We have been to Tokyo (Disneyland, Shinjuku, Ginza Shibuya etc..), but not Tokyo Tower and Dome.

And we want to see Mt Fuji this time if there's anything to see at this time of the year (7 Feb to 13Feb).

We would like to pack in Hiroshima and Kyoto if its doable.
Oh, especially where would be a good place to buy a kimono and a traditional Japanese doll?

Appreciate any and all advice especially about transport arrangements and connections.

Thanks a great deal.
