The famous dancing girl known as Hat Dancer, a geisha doll. What are these hats called? I haven't been able to find anything. I've tried Japanese hats and everything I can think of. Please help! I really would like to know.

The hat that this doll has is a lacquered shade (or hat). The reason you might find it difficult find the background *may* be that this doll/style of depiction is referred to as "Fuji musume," meaning "Japanese wisteria girl," because she is holding a branch of wisteria flowers. Normally this girl is depicted with a black, lacquered shade as in the photo I've posted a link to.
Do you have a photo of the doll you have that you can post? If it's not in this style, it could be other styles of dancers with shades or umbrellas actually.

Yes the link to the oil painting is the doll that I was refereeing to. I don't actually own one at all. It's just I went looking for the hat to help me find some photo's of people wearing them so I could draw it. However when I failed looking up Japanese hats and other key words nothing came up, so I came across here. So, now that I know the hat I can hopefully find some photos or reference's of people wearing them.

Syuriko, the furidashi-gasa is only used upon the "furidashi-gasa no odori (hat dance)". You don't really "wear" them. But this is probably one of the best photos available on the internet.

Btw, I mentioned earlier that it belongs to the Wisteria drama, but it seems that it's most typically used during the "Musume-dojoji" drama.
