Driving in Kyushu 2008/1/27 18:15
Hi, we intend to drive from Fukuoka to Kurokawa Onsen then to Yufuin Onsen. Any tips on where to get some good driving directions?

The "Road Atlas Japan" by Shobunsha is the best English road map source for Japan that I am aware of:

Wow, I . . . 2008/1/28 08:43
. . . did not know this atlas was available outside DOD Exchanges, but as Uji mentioned, it is the ONLY, remotely-English road guide to Japan.

The problem is, it only lists major roads because the resolution is too low. Still, it is better than nothing.

Japanese use the Mapple guides, but around 8 of them are needed to cover Japan in it's entirety, and at $45 a region, it's expensive.

The Road Atlas Japan is dead accurate regarding train stations and is highly recommended for those traveling off-the-beaten path. It lists 99.5% of all the train stations in Japan. It also shows geographical locations of a lot of major tourist attractions including temples and shrines.
