Different Japanese Dialects?

Recently I found out that the Kansai region in Japan have their own Kansai dialect. Like instead of the traditional 'arigatou' they say 'okini' I'm learning the basic Japanese language right now, would it be difficult to communicate with Kansai speakers? And what other Japanese dialects should I be aware of?

People in Kansai should be able to understand you. Since you are learning "standard" Japanese (I guess for a lack of better words).
If you say arigato, they're going to know what you mean.
