Holiday in Tohoku 2008/2/16 08:35
I am planning a 10 day holiday in Tohoku, and will be touching down at Narita Airport.

Is it recommended to get a JR East Pass or is there any pass that is value for money?

Intended dates are around 20-30 March.

The JR East Pass is the best valued rail pass for travel in Tokyo/Tohoku. But whether one pays off for your specific trip entirely depends on your itinerary:

still cold in march 2008/2/16 15:49
Tohoku is plenty interesting, but be aware that March is still pretty cold.

The days are short and some sites are not yet open.

Not saying 'don't go,' just go aware.

Tohoku or Izu 2008/2/16 15:54
dear Tama

Thanks for the headsup. Actually i was deciding between Izu and Tohoku.

Looking at brochures, it seems recommended seasons to go Tohoku are Autumn and Winter. Maybe I will choose Izu instead.

.. in 10 days you can actually do both.

That's too long for Izu, unless you have a specific need to be there. 2 or 3 days is fine.

And if you choose 2 winter-friendly spots in Tohoku (eg onsen), then you have a nice holiday in the making!
