I'm thinking about going to Japan for a year or two to study. So I was wondering, is it 100% sure you can get a place to stay at from your school and how are those places?
And if I don't want to stay at a student apartment or whatever it's called.. What's the cheapest option?
I prefer not to live with strangers.

No it is not 100% sure. Depending on the school or program you go into, they might not even have accommodations for you, so you might have to find it on your own.
Dormitories if a school offers one, might be a good place to start off in, from there you can work on the ground to find your own place.
