Bungo Takeda? 2008/3/7 02:08
I once passed through a place called Bungo Takeda (Taketa?) on the JR Hohi Line between Oita and Kumamoto.

Does anyone have any sightseeing information on this place?

Great castle walls 2008/3/7 23:44
The lower town has some old Edo period buildings that are interesting but the castle ruins are some of the best in Japan. Oka-jo was originally a hilltop defensive castle, as they all were back before the plains type took over. Because the hilltops around the castle were so large, instead of putting a castle in a lower area, Kato Kiyomasa, the builder of Kumamoto Castle, got permission to expand the castle on the mountain tops.

There is nothing of the castle left, because when the owner was called to Tokyo after the Meiji Restoration, the local magistrate, who apparently didn't like him, tore the castle down and sold everything off. Since it was a rush job (he wanted it done before the owner found out), everything that hit the ground is still in the same place today as then. It is kind of an archaelogical site as well since there's a lot of housewares and items still buried. If you get there at the end of this month (March), there are sakura planted all around the grounds now.

Anaguma,
Thank you for the information.
Question: From the Bungotakeda Eki, what types of public or private transportation is available? Are there any places to visit that are within walking distance from the eki?
