I have one 9yr old boy , one 8 yr old boy and two 4 1/2 yr old girls. to travel from kyoto to Takayama changing train in Nagoya, and onward to tokyo the next day on the afternoon, would it be too much train travelling for the kids? How is the ride like?

The seats on the Shinkasen trains are like coach seats on the airplanes and are somewhat comfortable for long rides of 3 to 5 hours. Most other long distance rapid trains seats are similarly comfortable. The seating area seems more spacious with more leg room. But, confinement for kids for long periods can be tiring for them and more so for the younger girls. They probably will fall asleep sometimes during the trip.

With our grandsons, we landed in Narita and our trip took us as far as Miyajima Island/Hiroshima and back to Tokyo with in-between stops at Kobe, Osaka and Kyoto. It was a lot of train rides for them but they were okay.

For our two grandsons about the same age as the two boys, you need to find something for them to keep them occupied such as handheld games, etc. It's not much difference than flying in airplanes as kids tend to have a shorter attention span and quickly get bored. It's good to bring snacks but make sure it's not the messy kinds and do carry a small sack to deposit thrash.
