We are traveling to Kyoto for one week and then to Tokyo.Maybe some side trips in each area. Can't figure out if railpass if necessary or if it is good on the subways in each city?

If you are traveling to Kyoto from Tokyo (you don't say where you are coming from before Kyoto) and back to Tokyo within 7 days and maybe while in Kyoto you do some day trips like Himeji and Nara, then the pass would save you money. The JR Rail Pass is only valid on JR trains, not subways or private railways.
