What is the evening chime sounds heard around tokyo (and i've heard most of Japan) around 5 to 6 pm? I've heard it has something to do with schools but what exactly is it?

Usually schools and public offices ring a tune to announce that it is a certain time. It helps their students or employers to know that it is time to go home, while contributing to the society such as to the children playing in parks without a clock.
