hot spring in takayama or shirakawa? 2008/5/10 01:47
I'll be going to takayama and shirakawago, would like to go to an onsen in one of these places if possible. Is there a outdoor onsen that is rather scenic and easily accessible via public transport? Can't afford too long a travel time, so nearby ones would be good. thanks

Any recommended Onsen 2008/5/22 13:17
Hi,
I'm going takayama next week. Checked out the link above, but not too useful.
Any onsen in takayama or shirakawago towns? I read about this hotel with onsen, Takayama Green hotel. Does anyone know whether they admit guests that are not staying at the hotel for a fee?

Takayama or Shirakawago onsen 2008/5/22 17:13
The only way I know to find out about whether or not the various onsen hotels or ryokans allow 'day return' visitors is to check their individual websites, which are linked to the website above. You might be able to figure it out by looking at their websites...usually day use of hotel/ryokan onsen is from mid-morning to mid-afternoon - from 1000 to 1500, for example. So if you click on the bath info and see hours like this (with a yen charge listed, too) you can usually assume they have day use. Not really a reliable way to do this.
The Takayama and Shirakawago tourist info offices can probably help.
Shirakawago has a very nice public bath (I was there four years ago and it seemed quite new, and was very modern and spacious) but I don't think it's an 'onsen'. It's heated tap water, on other words. It's indoors, too.
Neither Shirakawago nor Takayama are really known for onsen.

Any idea how long it'll take from shirakawago to hirase onsen? Is there any public transport available between these 2 places?
