planning a trip to Hokkaido in late Aug or early Sept. Is there any places of interest that i should not miss? What is the weather like?

Hokkaido's a great place. Of course it depends what you want to do, but I'd definitely recommend including Sapporo, Otaru (great seefood) and Hakodate in your schedule. Sapporo's easy to get around, has a wonderful park in the centre (Odori Koen) and has many great places to eat. If you like beer - or even if you don't - try visiting the Sapporo Brewery, where they do an all-you-can-eat lamb barbecue deal.

If you have time, head out to Asahikawa / Furano area for some mountain walks, wildflowers and onsen.

The weather? August and September are still summer, and it should be quite warm, though it isn't as humid as the other main islands of Japan to the south. You might bring a light sweater for cooler evenings, though if you are lucky you won't need it.
