For the visa application, I need to to a refence and their address as well as an address on where I'll be staying (going to study in college). Is the embassy pretty strict on this? Do they check or can I just put any address?

Hmm, they're probably not that strict and probably won't check, but maybe it's a good idea to find out where your going to live. I've been wondering this myself. I mean, when you go to Japan, are you going to find a place right then and there? You should plan it out and find a good place to live.
