Another question on camera 2008/5/23 09:56
We have the intention of getting a EOS 40D camera. We want to know whether is it cheaper to buy in Japan or back here in Singapore. Can anybody let us know the retail price for the camera
in Japan.

Thanks!

The usual price for Canon 40D is 124,300yen with 18-55mm lens or 111,400yen body only.

The Canon 40D can be found for 112,000yen with 18-55mm lens or 95,000yen body only.

All of these only have Japanese warranty & manual.

How much is it in Singapore?

Hi sandy,

We think the price for EOS 40D with len 24-105mm will cost us about $3k sing dollars (more than 220000Yen). It seem like it is cheaper in Japan minus the fact about the menu and warranty. The body itself will cost about $1.6k.

Do you think you can help me find out the price for the lens only? 24-105mm.

Thank you very much for the informations.

International Warranty 2008/5/25 21:45
Dont forget that many stores in Akihabara have a duty free section where you can purchase goods with an international warranty

Duty Free 2008/5/25 23:12
The main problem with buying duty free at Akihabara, is that it will often cost 30% more than the best price for the Japanese model!!!!

Fran, there is something you may or may not realize with the 24-105mm F4L IS USM, in spite of the fact it is an excellent lens.
Because the 40D has a sensor smaller than 35mm film, the photo that is captured is effectively cropped. This means that the image that is captured on the 40D is effectively like an image on film taken with a 38-168mm lens. This means that you are not getting the really wide angle that you might expect at the shortest focal length.

ILd say to go to Akihabara and forget about the warranty and focus on finding a model with english menu on it. You can always photocopy or download the manual somewhere on the internet. It shouldnLt be very hard and around the japanese price. If you go to Osaka donLt forget to check Den Den Town, some shops having better prices than Akihabara (the other day they had a great deal on a Nikon D80 with a 18-70 for 91,000 yen!!!)

Dear all, really appreciate all your suggestions and tips on buying the Canon EOS 40D. We still have a week before our trip begin. So will use this week to consider all the factors before we commit one.

Once again, thanks!!

You are able to CHANGE the menu language from Japanese to English on the Japanese model Canon 40D.
Currently the cheapest at Akihabara for the 40D with 18-55mm lens is 111,780 yen at Wink:

I can get the Nikon D80 with a 18-70mm lens at Akihabara for around 87,000 yen!!!!

Duty free in Akiba 2008/5/27 04:13
You are of course correct that the Duty Free stores in Akiba are often flippin expensive compared to the Japanese stores. I just thought it was worth a mention if the warranty is important to you. In my case it isnt ^_^
