Where to stay is Tokyo? 2008/5/23 13:24
We will be in Tokyo from August 1 to August 5, that is 5 nights.

We have a day trip to Nikko and Kamakura planned with 2 full days of sightseeing in Tokyo.

The question is, what area of Tokyo should we try to find a hostel or Ryokan in?

Thanx in advance!

Anywhere with easy access to a train or subway station. Try Toyoko Inn - a resonable & basic business hotel chain. They have an English website with online reservations.

night type or not? 2008/5/24 14:35
Will you go clubing in Tokyo? If yes, I recommend Shinjuku, Shibuya, Roppongi. If you dont mind it, Any area around Yamanote-line will do.

In Tokyo, south-western area is the most expensive and upmarket. as you go north-east, accomodation rates gradually get lower.

Also, your itineray looks very good and balanced if you visit the region of Kanto.

sawanoya 2008/5/24 22:52
How about www.sawanoya.com
I always stay there. It is 5000 yen only, with free internet (2 in the lobby) + if you have your own laptop, you can have connections in the room. And the owner speaks english. Nice clean place. In a nice quiet "old tokyo" area

I stayed in Asakusa and Ueno. In Ueno I was close to the Yamanote line and in Asakusa, while I wasn't close to the Yamanote line I was still close to the subway so it wasn't a problem. In fact, I prefered staying in Asakusa.

In Asakusa I stayed for 4 nights at the Hotel Kamogawa which is very well located. You can book a room through their website (website in English as well): http://www.f-kamogawa.jp/index.htm

As for Ueno, I stayed at Hotel Edoya: http://www.hoteledoya.com/main.html

Kamogawa is a nice little hotel , very clean and located in a quiet street right next to Sensoji temple.

Edoya is located in a quiet street of Ueno and is more of a real hotel than Kamogawa. It's clean but some of the rooms are a little old (I stayed in two different rooms).
