JR Pass / Subway 2008/5/29 09:28
Hi,

I am not sure if this question has been asked several times but can the JR pass be used for subway at Osaka/Tokyo?

Many thanks.

Amanda,

The Japan Rail Pass can only be used on JR lines, so it is not valid on subways or other private lines.

Depending on where in Tokyo you're going the JR pass may get you to your destination without using the subway. The Yamanote, Joban, Sobu and Chuo lines are all JR lines and either circle Tokyo, cut across it or connect at major JR stations.

Osaka has a similar JR line that circles it. So yes, there are some l=JR lines useful for transport within Tokyo and Osaka, but their usefulness depends on where you are going to and from.
