Purchase train tickets before trip?

We have 6 days to travel in Kyoto and Tokyo. Can we purchase train tickets before our trip? We want to go from Osaka to Kyoto and then to Tokyo and back to Osaka.

There is no way to purchase the tickets from abroad, but you will be able to do so as soon as you enter Japan. Unless you travel during one of the three peak seasons of the year, there is no need to book far in advance.

Because you are traveling Osaka - Kyoto - Tokyo - Osaka, it is worthwhile to get a one week JR Pass, which can only be purchased outside of Japan.
It's cheaper than buying all of those single ticket on their own.
