i had a crush on this japanese guy and during his last day of stay, i said aitakata... is it alright if a said it? how did he understand it?

Someone had commented on You Tube that "aitakatta" means " I miss you". That fitted to the lyrics of Akb48's song on context.
But ..., usually the word means "I've wanted to see you". In the video of Akb48 they missed the train the boy rode on. So they sang aitakatta.

I guess the guy didn't understand why you had said the word, but also I suppose he had realized that you love him.
