will be visting Japan for the first time. Will be staying in Nara with a friend. What should I not do to offend while visting. Will be in town for 22 days.

From my experiences: if somebody offers you something like: ''yes, please come on in and have dinner with us,'' that's code for ''don't come in and have dinner with us.''
It sounds really harsh but that's just how a lot of Japanese folks (especially older and more traditional) are.
Oh, and don't ever ever ever ever walk into a house beyond the porch area with your shoes on.

and preferably do not mention you intend to play golf in Nara. It might be an extremely costly obligation for you friend just to try to enable this. I
