Me and my friend are both going to japan in a little under two monthes and we will have just turned 18 (which is considered an adult where i live). but i noticed the smokeing age and drinking age in tokyo is 20 so does this mean i need to be 20 to check into my hotel?

Preferably pre-book the hotel stay and have a credit card if you are staying at higher class hotels. You should be fine in hostels. But unlike some other states it is not forbitten in Japan that a 18 year old is travelling alone and he can stay overnight in a hotel, hostel, capsule etc.
