Scenic Waterfalls 2008/7/3 03:23
Hello! My mother and I will be visiting Tokyo, Matsumoto, an Kyoto in November. I would like to take her to see a lovely waterfall in full Autumn color without a lot of civilization (telephone wires, cars, people etc) in the way (scenic bridges are ok though!). I am currently thinking of the falls in Nishizawa valley. Are there any other must-see waterfalls in these 3 areas? I've already checked out the Nikko area falls a few years back.

Fukiware Falls in Gunma Prefecture

Kamikochi has beautiful Kappa-bashi bridge but I'm not sure about waterfalls there.

I guess it's difficult to avoid ppl in such a place.
Nov is popular season for hiking and sightseeing, even to Japanese.
However, you certainly can find some places meet your demand.
Are you renting a car? If not, you can't go anywhere that you want.
I recommend you Okutama area/Tokyo (near my hometown) because it's not well-known to foreigners.
After all, I'm afraid it'll be crowded more than you think. So choose weekdays.

Thanks! 2008/7/4 03:26
All of these places look absolutely splendid! In particular, I loved the photos of Kegon no Taki and Kuzuryu no Taki. I found the directions to Kegon no Taki, but couldn't find much info about Kuzuryu. I do have directions for the Nishzawa Keikoku Waterfalls as well. Also, if I am intending to visit around November 16, which of these would have the most colorful koyo display? Or is it too late in the season around that time?

Nikko Kegon-no-taki 2008/7/4 13:32
Nikko's koyo photos here were taken in mid/late Oct. It perhaps mid-Nov is a little late.
I'm not sure Kegon has Koyo in Nov because Koyo is depending on the year weather, quitely.

Nikko has terrible crowded traffic in that season.
That's a topic for broadcast news every year. However, you can easily find the way to go so that many visitors comes from overseas.
You may know there's a Tosho-gu which's a world heritage.

One thing I don't accept on Kegon is that we need to use an elevator to get the best view.
That's lack of romanticism though I know Nikko is certainly beautiful. (just my opinion)

Kuzuryu-no-taki Tokyo (long sentence...) 2008/7/4 13:53
Kuzuru(Tokyo) has few transportations. I'm afraid you feel troublesome to go there.
I'll inform how to go to Kuzuru because it's good to know you're interested in.
As that's Tokyo, Koyo season is later than Nikko. Mid-Nov is the best, or early, or late....
You can choose where to go at last, depending your schedule and availability.

1. Take a train to "Musashi-itsukaichi" on Itsukaichi-line; it's connected with
Chuo-line from Tokyo-station or Ome-line from Tachikawa-station.
Note that it's rare that you can get straight from central Tokyo to Itsukaichi without
transfer. In best you've no transfer, and in worst you need to transfer 2 times.

Chuo-line---Tachikawa-station----Ome-line----Haijima-station----Itsukaichi-line----Musashi-itsukaichi
Chuo-line---(pass straight Tachikawa)----Haijima-station----Itsukaichi-line----Musashi-itsukaichi
Chuo-line---(pass straight Tachiakwa and Haijima)----Musashi-itsukaichi

2. Take a bus to "Kazuma" (the terminal stop) from Musashi-itsukaichi station. From the bus stop, walk 5-6min to the waterfall.
Bus takes 60 min. The fee is 910yen in one way.

The bus time table here ; says it stops "Hossawa-no-taki waterfall" on the way (time witch marked with star).

The reason why you can't find the way to Kuzuru is that it's inconvenient, and not famous like Nikko and Nishizawa.
Even Tokyo's citizens doesn't know it so well.
So, if you go there, you'll be the first person in your country.
There's also "Mitou-ootaki waterfall" in that area. A visitor center "Tomin-no-mori (Forest of Tokyo citizen)" is used by hikers and tourists.
It's more convenient than Kuzuryu, but its transportation is same.
