Is Mingpei a surname

Is Shi a first or last name? I also need to know how to address someone in a letter do I write Mr. or Miss shi etc. Thanks

Ming Pei Shi is a Chinese name, not Japanese at all. I am pretty sure that Ming Pei is the given name and Shi is the family name, but you could write it either way around (i.e. Shi Ming Pei as well) as Chinese people often use the given name- first name order when writing their names in alphabet.

If it is a Japanese name, for some reason you have been given the Chinese pronunciation of the characters.

Above I meant the "given name, family name" order.

Also you would be better off asking on a Chinese forum whether it is a male or female name, and even then without the actual characters it may be difficult to tell.
