Be careful as you look around for extra work - does an engineer visa allow you to do any other business management related job? (I assume you will be working in a consultancy firm fulfilling a position that requires engineering knowledge in the first place) and does your current full-time employment contract allow you to do extra work?

Yes 2008/7/15 12:32
I have been learning Japanese since last six months..so, yes I can speak Japanese but not fluent and I will be improving once I reach there. I will also be taking Japanese language class in Nagoya. My office president has no problems with what I do besides office hours and we have already talked on this.

scope of visa 2008/7/15 13:06
Your company president might not mind what kind of work you do, but Japan Immigration does. You can only do the kind of work specified for the type of visa you hold. For example, an English teacher cannot legally work as a waiter, and an engineer cannot legally work as an English teacher. Only people with spouse visas or permanent residence can work freely in any industry.

You may or may not be able to get permission from Immigration to do work that falls outside the scope of your visa. I hear that if you have recently arrived in Japan they would be less likely to grant this kind of permission.

Friend wanted to do something similiar 2008/7/15 14:18
My friend thought the same thing- she has been in Japan for a year now and her Visa says ''teaching''; she tried to get a part time job doing something else and immigration gave her a very hard time because her Visa only says ''teaching'' on it and she was not able to get a part time job doing something else (so now she is teaching at a 2nd school). I think you will need to speak to immigration. I dont think its that simple.

not to mention that learning Japanese well enough to get by will take you a lot of time and energy after work.

If you want to work outside the scope of your visa, you'll need to apply for a "Certificate to Engage in Activities other then Previously Granted".

So if you're working as an Engineer then you can't work as a teacher, but if you get Permission to.. da da da (as mentioned above) then you might be able to get a part-time gig for the extra funds. I know someone doing the opposite, Specialist in Humanities (teacher) with Permission to do some PT in a unrelated field.

well.... 2008/7/15 19:23
thanks for the views...it seems tougher than I imagined..immigration might or might not give hard time but If there is a personal understanding between my part time employer and me..does it still become a problem?...I mean can't an engineer perform other office tasks?....well I am not sure..
