I read the posts about Japanese electrical outlets and it was very helpful. I have one question: would a digital camera charger be "sensitive" equipment or would it be OK to plug it in?

my friends and I each have Japanese cameras bought in Canada and we never had a problem charging them in Japan.

Chris,
The charger provided with the camera should have the acceptable voltage range clearly marked on it. Most devices these days are usually compatible with 100 V to 240 V mains supplies, but you need to check what the label says on the charger - not rely on anecdotal evidence here.
