American groups in Tokyo/Kawasaki 2008/7/17 09:36
Hi. I just moved to Kawasaki from Texas, under a spouse visa. In part, I'm wondering what other American ex-pats are in the area. I'm also looking for organizations in the area that are aimed at Americans or other foreigners (such as conversation lounges, etc.) And, I'd like to get a feel from your experiences as to what the job market is like now. Thanks.

Probably a no-go 2008/7/17 12:32
Well, I've lived in Tokyo for about two years now...and to be honest the only thing that was made for "just foreigners" were some college groups I spent some time with (only because I was dating one of the instructors from the school). Other than that, I really have not seen too much...oh, wait. Sometimes there are some "foreigner parties" in Tokyo hosted by Worldfriends. It's supposed to be some chance for foreigners to meet some Japanese people, however, it's aimed for mostly the desperate single crowd and since you're married I would probably say it's not for you

There are a billion zillion groups of various kinds for ex-pats, the trick is finding them. There's an association of college women in Tokyo. http://www.cwaj.org/
There's this group:

Kawasaki is not far from Tokyo or Yokohama, so searches on the internet for either location will yield organizations that may be convenient for you.
There is an American Club in Tokyo, maybe your husband can get his firm to pay for it - not cheap!

There's an American Country Club in Yokohama, same deal. http://www.ycac.or.jp/Default.aspx?ID=769
Metropolis magazine and website
http://www.metropolis.co.jp/default.asp
has announcements and ads for groups of various interests - there's rugby, there's hash runs, bicycling there's...knitting & crocheting groups...somewhere. http://www.metropolis.co.jp/tokyo/recent/listings.asp#others
It just takes a bit of research.
