I'd like to know in which direction does it face so I can decide whether to go in the AM or PM for the best light for photographs.

Hello, Dick H!

I visited the Daibutsu once and in my memory he/she/it faces to south direction.
(I dont know which gender the Daibutsu is.
Do you know which one is correct?)

Then I checked it by the google-earth
maps.google.co.jp/?t=k&ll=35.982694,140.22018&spn=0.00586,0.009978&t=k

The website shows that the Daibutsu faces to just south direction.

As for your information, when you go inside of the Daibutsu and upstairs by elevator, you will find nice views of east/west/north/south-sides through the windows.

I hope nice weather and enjoying of your visit to the Daibutsu!!!

Hi Yasu,
Thanks for the information. South facing should be good most of the day for photos.
I think Buddha is male and I know Kannon is female. I think she is the Goddess of peace.
There are quite a few Kannon around Tokyo. The ones that come to mind are the Takasaki Kannon, the Ohfuna Kannon and the one on the east side of Tokyo Wan.

Hey, Dick H

OK, Then the Daibusu(The great Budda) should be male.

Thank you.

I hope you will shoot nice photos of him.

Best, Yasu
