Okay so my friend is trying to find this movie. He said he watched it 16 or 17 years ago, so it's probably a late '80s early '90s film. He was young when he watched it, so all he remembers is that at the end, the sick mother dies peacefully and a lotus flower blooms outside her yard. It was a drama; it was not anime.
