Which part of Japan to go in Dec?

Hi,
Is planning a trip with my frens to go Japan in early to Mid Dec this year. But not sure where to go. Thinking of Hokkaido but heard that snow storm is common during that period. Can someone advise where else to go and what to see in that prefecture ?
