JR regional pass for area sth of Nagoya? 2008/8/9 09:33
Hi

I want to travel in the area south of (and including) Nagoya e.g. Osaka, Kyoto etc for a week. Is my only option to get a JR pass or can I get a cheaper regional rail pass (JR West?) for the above areas?

thanks

The Kintetsu Rail Pass covers many areas in that region, however, I heard that the pass is not so broadly available as the Japan Rail Pass:

Kintetsu Rail Pass is inexpensive and very useful, we used it this April. You can find detail info. on the following sites:

I also recommend it, if your base is going to be in Nagoya. For example, my expenses were something like that:
1. Initial price: 3500 yen + shipping so the total price was around 5500 yen.
2. First trip: Osaka. For that i used 2 free ltd. express vouchers.
3. Second trip: Kyoto. One voucher + one trip back, total about 1900 yen
4. Nara, total about 3800
5. Kashikojima, total about 3500
6. Yoshino, total again about 3800

Also, for me it seems, that Kintetsu stations and trains aren't crowded at all, even during the cherry blossom week. They are not as fast as hikari or nozomi, but the price is also lower. Seats are also quite comfortable and leg room is also quite big (my height is about 185cm).
