JR Seat Reservation purchase question

I looked at the train section but didn't see the answer to my query. My friend got me a reserved seat on a train (Y300 fee or whatever) but didn't purchase the actual ticket. So what do I do with this reservation ticket in order to get the actual travel ticket. Can I just buy it in the machine or do I have to go to the counter and show them the reservation?

The details depend on what train it is.
But most likely you can buy the base fare ticket at either the machine or the ticket counter. Depending on what type of train it is, a special, sophisticated vending machine (found only at major stations) is required.
