Advice sought on Hokkaido plans

Aloha,

I have just booked flights to Tokyo in early June/2009. Having traveled to Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, Takayama and Kanazawa, Nikko, Hakone/Izu peninsula in previous trips, we would now like to go north. We have two full weeks and seek any suggestions, general or specific. We are a family of 3, two adults and a 12 year old. We like to eat Japanese food, especially sushi and seafood. We love smaller cities, scenic vistas and experiences, and traditional inns. Any advice would be welcome and appreciated.
